Forward Basic

The forward basic moves you and your partner along a line instead of side to side. Same 8-count structure, but stepping forward and back.

This is the second pattern most beginners learn. It opens up movement on the dance floor and sets you up for turns and cross-body leads.

The Pattern

  • Step forward with your left foot on beat 1.
  • Collect on beat 2, step forward again on beat 3, tap on beat 4.
  • Reverse it going back on beats 5 through 8.

Key Points

  • Keep your steps small. You don't need to cover a lot of ground.
  • Stay on the balls of your feet for smooth weight transfers.
  • Your upper body stays calm. The movement is in your legs and hips.

Takeaway

Once your side basic feels natural, the forward basic is the next step. Same rhythm, different direction. Practice both until switching between them feels effortless.
